On 28 March 2025, the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM) gathered for a lively celebration marking its 22nd founding anniversary. Established on 27 March 2003, IESM has since grown into a vibrant academic and research community at the forefront of environmental and atmospheric science in the country.

This year’s theme, “Catch 22: Navigating the Power of Balance and Harmony in Knowledge and Growth,” reflects the ongoing challenge of pursuing scientific excellence while nurturing personal, professional, and institutional wellbeing—a fitting reminder of the balancing act that defines both our work and our lives.

A highlight of the program was the awarding of the Most Outstanding Alumni Award to Dr. Maria Carmela Q. Capule, who was recognized for “exemplifying the values of the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology through outstanding accomplishments and service.” Her contributions reflect the spirit of leadership, integrity, and impact that IESM aspires to foster in all its graduates.
As part of the broader celebration, the IESM Anniversary Talk Series has been running since early March and will continue through April. The series features talks from faculty, students, and alumni, offering diverse perspectives on the anniversary theme of balance and harmony in research, education, and growth. A few more talks are scheduled in the coming weeks, and members of the IESM community are encouraged to join and take part in the ongoing discussions.
Now in its 22nd year, IESM continues to grow as a hub for science, learning, and collaboration—recognized not only for its academic excellence but also for its service to the public and commitment to sustainability. In the past year alone, IESM has been recognized as a Partner for Environmental Sustainability by the DENR-EMB, received the PAGASA Wind Vane Award for 2024, and was honored with a System Award from the Philippine Science High School System. IESM also recently welcomed a delegation from JICA and the Fiji Meteorological Service for WMO Regional Training Centre discussions, reflecting its active role in regional and international collaborations. These recognitions underscore IESM’s enduring mission to advance knowledge, serve communities, and help shape a more sustainable and resilient future.
