IESM Alumna Wins First Place in Poster Presentation at 2026 NRCP Annual Scientific Conference

IESM alumna Mary Joe Alma Escol-Canlas received First Place in the Poster Presentation for Cluster 2 during the 2026 Annual Scientific Conference (ASC) of the Department of Science and Technology – National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP), held on 13 March 2026 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

Her poster, titled “Impacts of Tropical Indian Ocean SST Variability on Philippine Seasonal Rainfall and Temperature,” is based on her thesis at the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, University of the Philippines Diliman. Escol-Canlas presented the poster online during the conference, while Dr. Joseph Basconcillo of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) received the award on her behalf.

The research was conducted under the supervision of IESM faculty member Dr. Rafaela Jane Delfino as main adviser, with mentorship from Dr. Basconcillo.
