
The Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration in the protection and conservation of marine mammals in the Philippines. With the Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Laboratory (MMRCL) as PMMSN’s research arm, this partnership lays the foundation for enhanced response, research, and management efforts to safeguard these species and the marine environment. The main objective of this MoU is to harmonize the marine mammal protection and conservation programs that the BFAR regional offices with coastlines are implementing to assure best practices and the like are promoted. This also ensures that the partnership with the BFAR and the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding (PMMSN) are strengthened and sustained. It also stipulated or re-emphasized that the Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Laboratory of the UP IESM is its research and conservation arm for marine mammal strandings and other related phenomena.
