We are looking for one (1) graduate student who is interested to work on the Fulbright US Scholar Awarded to Dr. Shakil Saghir with the title, “Assessing Microplastic Contamination in Fish from Laguna Lake: Implications for Public Health in the Philippines”.
Objective of the Fulbright research:
The proposed research is aimed to assess and compare the levels of MP contamination in fish sourced from different bay areas of Laguna Lake in the Philippines and evaluate potential public health risks associated with fish consumption practices. In specific, this research will focus on how to:
- Quantify the levels of MPs in fish samples collected from the North, East, South, and West Bay areas of Laguna Lake
- Identify and categorize types of MPs (e.g., fibers, fragments) found in the gastrointestinal tract and selected tissues of the sampled fish using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques
- Evaluate the potential health risks associated with the ingestion of MPs by comparing the levels of MPs in fish and relating to estimated total daily ingestion of fish by the Filipinos
What is expected to the graduate student:
- Work FULL-TIME (Note 1), collaboratively and professionally.
- Write a line-item budget (PhP 125,000, Note 2) for this opportunity in relation to the research and as his/her/their thesis work.
- Commitment to complete the work within the specified timeline (August 2025-Jan 2026)
Note 1. This opportunity will not cover the monthly stipend/salary of the graduate student.
Note 2. The line-item budget may include the cost for transportation during sampling, sampling cost, analysis cost, reagents and rental of instrument/equipment (No budget for capital expenditure).
