The Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM) have recently concluded the Training on Advanced Meteorology and its Impact to Air Quality for the technical staff of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR – EMB).
The training is a continuation of the Basic Meteorology Training but covers more advanced topics. Topics include Advanced Synoptic Meteorology, Atmospheric Pollution, Air Pollution Meteorology, Aerosol-cloud-climate-interaction and Mesoscale Meteorology. Experts from IESM have delivered these topics which comprises of Dr. Leoncio Amadore, Dr. Flaviana Hilario, Dr. Mylene Cayetano and Dr. Gerry Bagtasa.
The closing ceremony was held last July 28, 2023 at the IESM Auditorium. The IESM director, Dr. Cherry L. Ringor, as well as key officials from EMB, Director Gilbert C. Gonzales and Engr. Marcelino N. Rivera, Jr., gave inspirational messages to the participants. A total of 32 participants have completed 126 hours of the training which came from the central and regional offices (CAR, Region I, II, IV-A, IV-B, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XIII) of EMB. Engr. Jundy del Socorro, one of the participant of the training, delivered his learnings and the challenges he has faced for completing the training.
This training was able to capacitate the EMB technical staff on assessing the effects of meteorology on the dispersion of air pollutant which will eventually help them on their function of assessing Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) conditions as well as Airshed designation of Attainment and Non-Attainment Areas. With more people equipped with the concepts of meteorology and atmospheric science, this will help DENR fulfill its mandate of achieving and maintaining a clean air for the Philippines.
