Capacity Building for Marine Megafauna Conservation: IESM and BFAR-NMFDC Conduct National Trainer’s Training

  • Post category:News

The Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM), through the Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Laboratory (MMRCL), is proud to have partnered with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – National Marine Fisheries Development Center (BFAR-NMFDC) in conducting the “National Trainer’s Training on the Safe Handling and Release of Cetaceans and Whale Sharks Interacting in Purse Seine and Ring Net Fishing Operations”.

This training program, held in two batches in Subic, Zambales, aimed to build the capacity of BFAR’s technical, regulatory, and enforcement personnel, along with members of local fishing organizations, on proper response protocols during interactions with marine megafauna in purse seine and ring net fisheries. This initiative supports the Philippines’ commitment to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) conservation and management measures, aligning both science and policy in pursuit of sustainable fisheries.

As BFAR-NMFDC’s partner in this endeavor, the MMRCL facilitated science-based lectures on the biology, threats, and safe release techniques for cetaceans, sea turtles, and whale sharks. By sharing our research findings and field experiences, we aspired to ensure that the training emphasized practical, context-based solutions for minimizing harm to these vulnerable species.

This collaborative effort underscores the importance of intersectoral partnerships in marine biodiversity conservation. We extend our gratitude to BFAR-NMFDC for the opportunity to contribute to this vital work, and to all participants for their active engagement.

As we continue to bridge science with action, IESM and MMRCL remain steadfast in our commitment of building capacity for marine mammal conservation across the country.
