The Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN) successfully held its 12th National Symposium on 9–11 December 2025, bringing together marine mammal responders, researchers, veterinarians, local government units, and conservation partners from across the country. Led by PMMSN President Dr. Lemnuel V. Aragones, faculty member of the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM), this year’s gathering carried the theme “PMMSN: 20 Years of Unity, Knowledge, and Service.” The three-day event featured plenary talks, knowledge-sharing sessions, poster presentations, and recognition of chapters, partner institutions, and volunteers who have contributed to marine mammal conservation through the years.

A key highlight of the symposium was the presentation of the draft Philippine Marine Mammal Management Plan, which seeks to guide future work in research, stranding response, capacity development, and policy support. The technical sessions provided updates on current field practices, case studies, and scientific findings, reflecting the Network’s continued efforts to integrate research and management in marine mammal conservation. Speakers included keynote speaker Usec. Asis Perez, guest speaker Grant Abel, and representatives from PMMSN chapters, METAS, MMRCL, BFAR, and partnering organizations.

The symposium also highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding between PMMSN and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), which was formally signed on 9 September 2025. The MOU strengthens institutional cooperation in marine mammal protection and capacity building and reinforces the shared commitment to safeguarding marine ecosystems and fisheries resources. The successful event reflects the sustained collaboration among PMMSN members and partners and underscores the importance of coordinated, science-based approaches in marine mammal conservation across the Philippines.
